Segment bending follows the same process as thorn bending, without however the use of the thorn or dome. This causes a much more intensive deformation of the tube’s cross section, as smaller bend radii are used.
Segment bending is gradually being phased out by thorn bending, as mechanical impact can never compete in terms of high productivity, repetitive accuracy or precision. But segment bending still has an important role to play as a process (particularly in view of its much lower tooling cost/segment bend cost).
